FAQ: Position Statements

A Position Statement is a written, general statement of policy issued by the IEC that offers its interpretation of a provision of Article XXIX or other standards of conduct or reporting requirements. A Position Statement provides broad guidance to public officers, members of the General Assembly, local government officials, government employees, and members of the public regarding ethics issues.

Position Statements differ from Advisory Opinions and Letter Rulings in that Position Statements do not address a specific request from or regarding a specific individual. The IEC encourages covered individuals and members of the public to request further clarification or guidance, if needed, through a request for an Advisory Opinion or Letter Ruling.
